A Cleveland man was arrested on multiple charges, including child abuse, after the mother of a juvenile reported to police that her son was hanging out with someone who was carrying a gun.

The man, Jake Joseph Menard, 20, was arrested by the Cleveland Police Department on Thursday, Feb. 6, at an apartment complex on Pointe South Road S.E.

According to an affidavit of complaint obtained by the Cleveland Daily Banner, the boy’s father reported that his 15-year-old-son was being unruly and “cussing and yelling at his mother.”

When police arrived, the mother said she did not want the "boy" and her son to be "around each other."

The person described by the mother was detained after walking into the office complex office.

According to the affidavit, the individual was detained  due to "information police had received about his being armed." In addition, he refused to identify himself to police.

He was frisked for weapons and his I.D. was retrieved from his wallet. It was Menard, who was currently on state probation.

In the report, the juvenile stated that Menard had “showed up and wanted to hang out.”

In addition, the juvenile stated  when he heard his mother was going to call the police,  Menard told him "to hide a backpack" that Menard had with him.

The juvenile told police  Menard said he “had something for him if he did not do it.”

As a result, the juvenile “believed this to mean that Jake would shoot him since he knew Jake [Menard] had a gun and had seen it on a prior date.”

Police learned from the juvenile that he took the backpack and had hidden it in the woods behind a storage shed.

Officers located the bag and recovered a .380-caliber handgun “which was reported stolen."

“Menard was the primary suspect in that theft,” the affidavit stated.

Officers also recovered 27.8 grams of a “substance believed to be marijuana, approximately 100 plastic baggies and eight rubber bands believed to be for packaging and distributing narcotics.”

In addition, police recovered a gold ring also “believed to be stolen from the burglary."

“We also recovered several articles of clothing and a phone charger, which fit the description of the phone in Menard’s pocket,” the report stated. “Mr. Menard was found to be in possession of $227 in cash, which was seized.”

Police said the money was obtained through drug-sale proceeds.

Menard was arrested for sale/delivery of Schedule 1, aggravated child abuse and neglect, a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm during a commission of a felony, theft over $1,000 and possession of drug unlawful drug paraphernalia.
