With a strong turnout expected for the first ever Cleveland Half Marathon and 5K race scheduled for Saturday, there will be a handful of road closures for the general public to be aware of.

Roads in and around Cleveland will be affected between 6-11 a.m. This event will include many runners and walkers.

After months of spreading the word about what hopes to be an annual race, the scenic route for runners will affect the following roads:

- Sunset Lane from Henderson to North Ocoee closed both directions; 7:30 a.m.-9:15 a.m.

- Ocoee Crossing, runners in left (northbound) lane 7:30 am-9:20 a.m.

The reaction to the upcoming race has been positive throughout the community and has interested non-locals to come participate in the event hosted by Terra Running Company.

“We are expecting about 400 runners/walkers on race day as well as almost 200 volunteers on the course,” co-owner of Terra Running Company Brittany Durkin said. “Over half of the participants are visiting our awesome city for this event. We really encourage the community to cheer the runners on along the course, play music for them, ring cowbells, make signs or register and join us as a race participant or volunteer.”

Among the registered racers so far there are 14 states represented and cities all over Tennessee.

“The excitement leading up to the race seems to be increasing the closer we get to race day,” Durkin said. “We have runners stop by the store daily to check out the maps, ask training tips, get nutrition and see the finisher’s medal. We can’t wait to get it all underway.”

Local colleges, businesses and teams will volunteer and contribute to the race. Water stops and aid stations will be set up conveniently through the course and each racer will get a medal and a bag of free gifts.

The start and finish line is near the courthouse on Ocoee Street.

“We had three course preview runs and everyone has really liked the sights of the course and the design,” Durkin said. “The organizations putting on the aid stations are excited to support the runners and be involved.”

The 13 race sponsors include: Check Into Cash, CPQ PICS, Cooke’s Food Store, Chick-fil-A, Lee University, Cleveland State Community College, Team Lowman Endurance Coaching, Nuun, East-West Billboards, Huma Chia Energy Gel, Special Deliveries Cleveland, LoAdebar and Historic Cleveland Neighborhood Association.
