Christmas spirit hits 'The City With Spirit'

I believe the generosity and commitment our residents have to help others in need exemplify why we are "The City With Spirit."

The people of Cleveland show that generosity time and time again.  What better time of the year than the Christmas season to help those in need? Join us in doing just that.

The city of Cleveland is collecting food donations to help victims of domestic violence. Collection has already begun and will last through Dec. 20.  Food items collected will go toward the Harbor Safe House, a local program offering shelter and resources to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

We are encouraging people to give in a different way than is typically seen in a food drive ... by following a Reverse Advent Calendar of food items so that items can be given throughout the month. The idea for this came from our very own Lindsey Hawkins, deputy clerk in our Finance Department.

Here's a look at how the collection of items works, by list:

• Dec. 1: Box of cereal

• Dec. 2: Peanut butter

• Dec. 3: Stuffing mix

• Dec. 4: Boxed potatoes

• Dec. 5: Macaroni and cheese

• Dec. 6: Canned fruit

• Dec. 7:  Canned tomatoes

• Dec. 8: Canned tuna

• Dec. 9: Dessert mix

• Dec. 10: Jar of applesauce

• Dec. 11: Canned sweet potatoes

• Dec. 12: Cranberry sauce

• Dec. 13: Canned beans

• Dec. 14: Box of crackers

• Dec. 15: Package of rice

• Dec. 16: Package of oatmeal

• Dec. 17: Package of pasta

• Dec. 18: Spaghetti sauce

• Dec. 19: Chicken noodle soup

• Dec. 20: Tomato soup

• Dec. 21: Canned corn

• Dec. 22: Canned mix vegetables

• Dec. 23: Canned carrots

• Dec. 24: Canned green beans

All donations can be dropped off at any of the following locations:

• Cleveland Municipal Building, 190 Church St., Cleveland TN 37311

• Fire Station 1, 555 South Ocoee St., Cleveland TN 37311

• Fire Station 4, 2850 Keith St., Cleveland TN 37312

• Public Works Department, 474 Second St. SE, Cleveland TN 37311

This holiday season, I hope you will join us in "The City With Spirit” by getting into the “Christmas Spirit” and helping those in need.
