Rise Up To Conquer Challenges

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going."

A quote that has been around as long as the one above usually contains a kernel of truth as to why generation after generation uses it to teach children lessons about life. Today, standards are high, and there are various reasons for that. Today, many feel a student must obtain at least a bachelor's degree if not higher in order to land a job that produces good pay so that they can cover both their wants and needs.

That is just one example of how work ethic and perseverance are vital in our world today, but these qualities are needed in every aspect of life, because in every aspect of life there will be challenges that arise. With those challenges, there will be people who will tell you that you can't do things ... that you're not smart enough to ace the test or fast enough to win the race. There will be those people in every phase of your life, but when you become a person who can rise above their negativity, you will prevail time and time again.

The fact is, we have two choices when presented with a challenge: back down and accept defeat or refuse to accept defeat and conquer the task at hand. I know that parents are always saying that is is better to aim high and miss the mark than to aim low and hit the target every time, and I never really understood why this saying was so important until recently, when I began the process of applying to colleges.

The odds stacked against us in life are heavy the vast majority of the time, but if we never take a leap of faith and aim high, we will never know what we can accomplish. This topic is one that seems to be repeated over and over, but it's one that has literally shaped the world into what it is today.

When social injustice occurs in a society, there is a movement that takes place in order to change the injustice. However, these movements do not happen overnight. Change requires persistence, and persistence occurs when there is an entire group of people willing to rise above the challenges they are faced with and keep pushing until it gets done.

In the big things and the small, we can all look at these people for who they were and the things they accomplished: They did not let the weight of the world weigh them down from accomplishing the things that mattered the most.
