JACKSON, Miss. — Cranking his first home run in a Braves uniform, former local standout Ryan Casteel is off to a strong start for his new team.
After getting on base twice in his Mississippi Braves debut this past Friday in Chattanooga, Casteel has been in the starting lineup ever since as the team returned to their home stadium in Jackson, Mississippi.
Batting in the cleanup spot for the Double-A squad in the Atlanta Braves organization, the former Bradley Central and Cleveland State star started at first base in his premier game, was the designated hitter in his first two home games and was back at first for Monday's matinee.
While he was hitless in Chattanooga, Casteel did draw a pair of walks. In two weekend contests, he had a double and a single, plus drew two more free passes.
On Monday, he blasted the 65th round-tripper of his 10-year pro career, this one a solo shot to open the second inning in a 2-1 Braves victory.
While just hitting .231 (3-for-13), he has a .412 on base percentage and a .950 OPS.
The Braves continue a five-game home stand with the Montgomery (Ala.) Biscuits, a Tampa Bay affiliate, today through Wednesday.
