Casteel goes deep again

After getting Friday night off, Ryan Casteel was back in the Mississippi Braves' lineup Saturday and Sunday and responded by getting on base four times.

Hitting in the No. 5 hole as the designated hitter in both games, the former Bradley Central and Cleveland State standout blasted a solo home run and drew a walk in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Montgomery Biscuits, a Tampa Bay farm club.

On Sunday, Casteel roped a double and drew another free pass in four trips to the plate in a 9-3 defeat.

While hitting a modest .269, he has a strong .387 on base percentage in 16 games for the Atlanta Braves' Double-A farm team.

Eight of his 14 hits have gone for extra bases with five two-baggers and a trio of round-trippers to drive in eight runs. He currently has a .538 slugging percentage, with a .926 OPS.

Reaching base in 13 games, Casteel has also drawn nine base on balls and scored seven times.

Mississippi is 17-18 and in third place in the Southern League's South Division. The Braves have three more games at North Division-leading Montgomery before finishing up their 10-game road trip with five games in Birmingham (Chicago White Sox), which is in the North Division cellar, beginning Thursday.

A 2010 draft pick of the Colorado Rockies, Casteel is in his 10th professional season. He also played in the Seattle Mariners system for a year and a half. After playing Independent League ball last season, he signed with the Atlanta organization in January.

In 642 Minor League games, the 27-year-old has 660 hits in 2,411 at bats for a .274 BA, plus has a .333 OBP. He has blasted 67 home runs, ripped 159 doubles and 14 triples to drive in 351 runs and score 320 times.
