Bears finally finish off Hurricanes

COLLEGEDALE — In a game spanning eight days and taking 12 innings to complete, the Bradley Central Bears knocked off District 5-AA foe East Hamilton 5-4, Wednesday afternoon.

The Bears had to return to Collegedale to complete the game that was suspended due to darkness last Wednesday after 10 innings, with the scored tied 4-4.

Bradley (16-5, 6-4 District 5-AAA) will wrap district play next Wednesday by returning to Soddy-Daisy for a pair of games. The first game will a completion of Monday’s contest that was suspended due to severe thunderstorms, with the second game, which was washed out Tuesday, to follow.

In the extended game against the Hurricanes (9-13, 4-5), the Bears wasted little time getting on the board scoring a run in the top of first.

Junior Pete Williams led off the game with single, but was forced out at second on a ground ball by Jake Presley. Presley advanced to third on a double off the bat of sophomore Dylan Standifer, putting Bears at second and third. Presley trotted home on a fly ball from senior Byron Mantooth to give the Bears the early lead.

East Hamilton struck for a pair in the home half of the first off starting pitcher Junior Andy Bunch. A pair of base hits, sandwiched around a walk loaded the bases for the 'Canes, before Davis Dunn came home as the Bears could not pull off a double play. Tyler Blum then laced a single up the middle, giving East Hamilton the lead.

Bradley struck for three tallies in the third to retake the lead. Standifer singled to open the frame and advanced to second as Mantooth was hit by a pitch. Freshman Riley Black singled to score Standifer. With runners on the corners, senior Cason Still laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt that the Hurricane third basemen threw down the right field line trying to nab the speedy Still at first, allowing courtesy runner Briar Lee and Black both to score.

The Hurricanes tied the game with single runs in the third and fourth innings. Nick Woods opened the third with double and later scored on a double play ground ball. Matt Wingard opened the fourth with a walk from Bear reliever Tripp Storrs. Following a sacrifice bunt, Wingard scored in front of a double from Davis Dunn.

The score remained tied for the next seven innings, as both coaches called on their ace relievers. East Hamilton's Woods blanked the Bears for the next six innings allowing only a single by Standifer. Senior Colton Cross matched the University of Tennessee signee, blanking the ’Canes over the last five innings allowing only three hits before darkness forced the game to be suspended.

Coach Travis Adams opted to have Cross "start" the 11th inning Wednesday and East Hamilton went with Brandon Delvalle as Woods was unavailable. With two outs in the 12th inning, junior Tucker Cox lined a double over the left fielder’s head and raced home a few moments later with what proved to be the game winner as the Hurricane shortstop threw the ball away attempting to throw out Williams on ground ball that was fielded behind second base.

"I can't say enough about how Colton (Cross) has pitched this year. He now has won three games and saved two others for us. Tucker (Cox) has come on and played very well for us after (Caleb) Reed went down with his injury. I was very happy for him to get that big double for us in the last inning," said Coach Adams.

The Bears return to the diamond this afternoon as one of the host teams in the (Soddy-Daisy) Trojan Classic as Notre Dame comes to the McKenzie Baseball Complex at 4:30.
