Barefoot Nellie and Company to perform Friday at Cowboy Jubilee

Barefoot Nellie and Company will headline the Cowboy Gospel Jubilee this Friday at 7 p.m.

“Barefoot Nellie and Company is one of the most exciting bluegrass bands today,” said Steve Poteet, producer of the weekly event.

With the recent addition of Carl Towns, (guitar and vocals) of Rising Fawn, Ga., Elliott Varner from Fort Payne, Ala., (guitar and vocals), and Brett Martin from Loachapoka, Ala., (banjo and vocals), the band is a superb group of accomplished musicians.

The smooth, driving bluegrass group manages to blend traditional sounds with more progressive ones to create music that is both accessible and innovative — a successful fusion of things old and new.

Founding member Eric Bruce plays bass and sings alongside his wife and co-founding member, August Bruce, who plays fiddle and sings lead.

The Cowboy Gospel Jubilee is held at the Cleveland Cowboy Church in the Dockery Heights community, between Blue Springs and Blackburn Roads. It features both gospel and moral secular music performed in a variety of genres.

Also appearing on the Cowboy Jubilee stage will be Merle Travis-style guitar picker, Wally Varnell, Joel Moore and Elmer Bramlett.
