PITTSBURG, Kan. — Emily Buwalda finished fifth in the 800-meter run and Josiah Brooks was eighth in the triple jump as the Lee University track & field teams completed competition at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships Saturday.

With the duo finishing in the top eight of their events, they accumulated team points. The Lady Flames finished tied for 43rd and the Flames tied for 54th.

After setting a Lee record in the preliminaries on Friday with a sixth-place time of 2:10.40, Buwalda knocked nearly two more seconds off the record and improved one spot with a mark of 2:09.07.

“Emily ran a perfect tactical race and put herself in All-American contention,” said Lee head coach Caleb Morgan. “She came in ranked 17th and walked away with a fifth-place finish. Her final collegiate indoor race culminated in a fantastic finish, setting her up for an exciting final outdoor season.”

Brooks, part of the first flight of eight jumpers, recorded a jump of 15.35 meters on his first try to set a Lee record. In the last two attempts of the flight, he recorded marks of 15.10 meters and 15.18 meters.

Once the second and final flight was completed, Brooks stood in eighth out of nine athletes to advance to the final. The junior was unable to improve upon his first jump in the final round. He jumped 14.94 meters in the first attempt, fouled in the second and hit 15.16 meters in his last try.

“True to form, Josiah Brooks faced off in the triple in fantastic fashion,” added Morgan. “He stepped up when it mattered most and brought home Lee’s second All-American trophy of the day.”

The Lady Flames and Flames return to action March 16 at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta. The two-day outdoor event will be hosted by Georgia Tech.
