The Cleveland Lady Raiders hit the ball well at times, but didn't get the hits needed to overcome the steady barrage put up by Rhea County in a 10-1 softball loss to the Lady Eagles on a cold, windy opening day at Cleveland.

Emma Miles singled twice for the Lady Raiders and Lauren Adamson also picked up a single while Emma Bayne doubled in the loss. Bayne and Miles booked RBIs for Cleveland.

The Lady Raiders go for their first win of the season Thursday at McMinn.

“It's early in the year, obviously, but I've also got a really young team. We're still trying to learn how to make adjustments time after time when we're not getting the pitches we want, or we're not hitting the ball like we would wish. Our young ones still need to learn how to make adjustments quickly in the game,” said Lady Raiders coach K.J. Harris.

The Eagles struck first in the top of the first with a lead-off home run by Keeley Hickman. Rhea County took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the top of the third.

Cleveland cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Lydia Martin beat out an infield single and scored on Bayne's double to left-center field.

Sara Pritchard, who replaced starter M.E. Hentz in the circle to start the fourth, was greeted with back-to-back singles. The Eagles scored twice in the inning to open the lead back to 5-1 and came back in the upper half of the sixth to put three more runs on the board to make it an 8-1 game. Two doubles and two singles in the seventh put the Lady Eagles on top 10-1.

A walk and single gave the Lady Raiders life in the bottom of the inning. Freshman second baseman Miles stepped up with an RBI double to cut the Rhea lead by one, but it was not enough as the Lady Eagles got a 6-3 ground out to end the game.

“This team is hungry to get better every day,” said Harris. “I'm really excited about this group. It's my biggest group and the youngest group I've ever had. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for us.”
