To qualify, he had to give a speech to more than 100 people about his platform ideas to improve DECA, the international student organization for high school marketing programs, next year. McFadden also had a campaign booth set up for voting delegates to see in the theme of Flash Gordon. This was to represent that changes would be coming fast to Tennessee DECA if McFadden was elected.
On the awards night, it was announced McFadden will represent Tennessee DECA as secretary for the upcoming school year. McFadden has 12 trips scheduled with Tennessee DECA for leadership conferences, planning meetings and competitive event conferences. This will be a great opportunity for him to make networking connections along with building his knowledge in marketing and communication skills. He will host the 2012-13 Tennessee DECA Conference with the other four Tennessee DECA Officers at the Opryland Resort with more than 2,000 attendees.
McFadden recently returned from the DECA DC Power Trip in Washington, D.C. He and his fellow Tennessee officers spent a week touring Washington monuments. These included the White House, World War II Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Franklin Roosevelt Memorial and the Reflecting Pool. They also toured a number of museums such as the Museum of Air and Space, the Museum of Natural History, and the Holocaust Museum. The Tennessee state officers also spent time at leadership workshops where they got time to be with approximately 200 students from all over the East. These workshops taught public speaking, communication, and leadership skills, including what it means to be a servant leader. Each day was concluded with the Tennessee officers meeting for about 45 minutes to an hour planning the Tennessee Conference which will be held in March.
At state competition, DECA members are given real-world scenarios where they are to resolve business scenarios. Competition fosters leadership, communication, interviewing skills as well as confidence. It also provides an outlet for the students to utilize classroom learning. The marketing classes revolve around hands-on learning. These classes take the academics the students have accumulated from math, history and English and apply this knowledge to solve business situations within the community.
The marketing classes are applicable to help prepare students for practically any occupation. This information is being circulated as the marketing program is becoming prominent within the school. McFadden is the first Walker Valley High School student to run for State Office even more so win. His endeavors have sparked an interest in other students who are applying for office this coming term.
