Many people want to be spirits in heaven but they don’t want to be spiritual people on earth. Interestingly, our bodies are made up mostly of space. How can this be? Well, consider what our bodies are made of — atoms.

Atoms are composed of particles called protons, neutrons and electrons. But they consist primarily of space. They constitute the basic building blocks of all matter that make up everyday objects — a desk, the air, water, even you are made up of atoms!

Since your body is made up entirely of atoms, most of which is just space, that means your body is also made up almost entirely of empty space. In his book, “Short-Term Couples Therapy: The Imago model in action,” Wade Luquet, Ph. D., an associate professor of sociology at Gwynedd-Mercy College in Philadelphia, stated:

“Modern physics has given us the answer that relates to our basic composition: We are 99.99 percent space! Our bodies are made up of billions of atoms, all composed of a nucleus (a neutron and a proton) and encircled by electrons. As a matter of fact, they circle a billion times every billionth of a second!

“And everything we see, including your own body, is teeming with the energy from these billions and billions of spinning electrons. Furthermore, if we took all of the space out of our bodies, what we would have left would be a million times smaller than a grain of sand!”

A tiny little solid mass, less than the size of a microscopic grain of sand, is the only part of your body that’s solid mass. Imagine that! The rest of your body is empty space. If it wasn’t for that tiny spec of solid matter what would we be? It’s amazing that we can’t stick our finger right through our hand, but we can’t.

Look at your hands and try to imagine that you are 99.99 percent space. It’s a miracle! Imagine the energy it took to create this! You are the closest thing to being a spirit without being a spirit creature.

But the fact that our bodies are made up mostly of space does not make us spirits or spiritual beings, does it? Most people are not spiritual. So here is my question: Can a person be in the flesh but also be spiritual?

For example, Romans 8:5-6 says, “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” — New King James Version.

The Bible tells us it is possible to become “spiritually minded.” How? It involves change. First, Romans 12:2 says “Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God — what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect.” — Good News Translation.

Paul mentions two of the keys to becoming a spiritual person: Stop running with the world and start walking with God by letting Him change your mind. How is this done? By reading, meditating and applying God’s Word — accepting help and asking God for spiritual enlightenment.

1Timothy 2:3-4 says, “This is fine and acceptable in the sight of our Savior, God, whose will is that all sorts of men should be saved and come to an accurate knowledge of truth.” — New World Translation.

God can help us “come to an accurate knowledge of truth” if we pray for wisdom and Holy Spirit while studying His Word. The physical person will not do this. Paul explained why at 1Corinthians 2:14-16: “But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.

“Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others. For, ‘Who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?’ But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.” — New Living Translation.

Here Paul mentions the most important key: “We have the mind of Christ.” By studying the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, we can become spiritual persons, for no one gave us a better example of being spiritual than Jesus. How important is living a spiritual life?

Romans 8:8-9 says, “Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.” — English Standard Version.

Spiritual people are led by God’s Holy Spirit and make spiritual advancements to the best of their ability. Anyone who wants to please God can become such a spiritual person.

After all, we are made by spirit — not flesh, not liquids, but of spirit and space! And we can ask the most powerful Spirit of all to help us become what He always intended — spiritual people who truly reflect the glory of God.
