WRIGHT WAY: Health and happiness now

When I was a child I had double pneumonia, meaning the infection was in both my lungs. My parents were told I would not survive a second similar bout. After I recovered my mom gave me a vitamin every day to boost my immune system.

To this day I take a multivitamin and other health products to support my immune system. Unfortunately, nothing has been able to fully prevent the common cold and other illnesses. I am thankful, however, that I do not suffer from any malady other than aging — so far. It seems sickness and aging are accepted as part of the circle of life.

Fortunately, this has not prevented experts from searching for an all-purpose ingredient to bolster our immune system and combat any germ or toxic chemical threatening our health. Experts are currently learning more about glutathione, a small molecule that is produced by the body and found in every cell.

This naturally occurring substance acts as a super antioxidant, immune system booster, detoxifier and cell cycle regulator. It is said to help the body repair damage caused by infection, injury, stress and even aging.

According to MedicineNet.com., “Animal and laboratory studies have demonstrated that glutathione has the potential to fight almost any disease, particularly those associated with aging, since free radical damage is the cause of many of the diseases of old age.”

A recent article by Dr. David Jockers, available at www.naturalnews.com., stated, “Glutathione is like the cell’s security guard protecting the genetic equipment from outside attack. It is estimated that each cell in the body withstands 10,000 hits by free radicals each day. Glutathione disarms these free radicals before they wreak havoc and cleans up the oxidative stress related damage that has occurred.”

The online article went on to say, “Studies have shown that adequate vitamin D is necessary for optimal glutathione production,” and “the best vegetable sources include avocados, onions, garlic, turmeric, spinach and cruciferous (cabbage family) veggies.”

Patricia A. L. Kongshavn, Ph.D., a former professor at the Department of Medicine, McGill University in Montreal, Canada, wrote, “Glutathione is a very small protein made inside the cells from three amino acids obtained ultimately from our food or supplementation.

“One of these amino acids, cysteine, gives the glutathione its antioxidant and detoxifying properties. This amino acid is relatively rare in foodstuffs and this can lead to glutathione deficiency, even in healthy people.”

Although Kongshavn admits glutathione sold as a dietary supplement is mostly destroyed during digestion and therefore is of little use, some believe the current focus on cysteine and glutathione in biological research may change the future of people’s health.

While any progress toward a healthier and longer life is always welcome, I am also aware that no amount of vitamins, minerals or supplements can forever stay the effects of aging and death. Why? Romans 5:12 says, “This is what happened: Sin came into the world by one man, Adam. Sin brought death with it. Death spread to all men because all have sinned.” — New Life Version.

Of course, most reasonable people will want to grow old gracefully and stay as healthy as possible in this deteriorating state. But what about one’s spiritual health? 1 Timothy 4:8 says, “Growing strong in body is all right but growing in God-like living is more important. It will not only help you in this life now but in the next life also.” — New Life Version.

God’s Word highly recommends investing in spiritual education as the best protection against sickness, aging and death. John 17:3 says, “This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.” — New World Translation.

The wisdom found in God’s Word can produce genuine happiness — something that acts as a boosts to our spirituality, combating the toxicity of the world around us, while counteracting the deterioration caused by poor choices, which accelerates stress, injuries, sickness and death. It acts as a safeguard.

Dr. Derek Cox, a health official in Scotland, stated in a BBC News report: “If you are happy you are likely in the future to have less in the way of physical illness than those who are unhappy.”

This makes Revelation 1:3 a wise prescription: “Happy is the one who reads this book, and happy are those who listen to the words of this prophetic message and obey what is written in this book! For the time is near when all these things will happen.” — Good News Translation.

Is happiness and health tied into the Word of God? Find out for yourself. As 1Peter 2:2 says, “As newborn infants, form a longing for the unadulterated milk belonging to the word, that through it you may grow to salvation.” — New World Translation.
