“Tuesday we were confident and played a great game. Tonight we were the completed opposite,” proclaimed Bearette head coach Christie McElhaney after the 13-4 outcome.
“We played sloppy defense (six errors). We gave them extra outs. We were impatient at the plate,” she remarked. “We didn’t play up to our potential tonight.”
Bradley will take the weekend off and return to the diamond on Monday with a trip to Polk County for a 5:30 contest. The same two teams will play Wednesday at Bob McKenzie Field.
The Bearettes will travel to McMinn County Tuesday for a district battle.
The trouble began early for Bradley (5-8, 3-5 District 5-AAA) Thursday as Ooltewah (18-5, 5-3) put seven runs on the board thanks to five free passes, four hits and an error before the Bearettes got a chance to hit.
The host got a run in the bottom of the first without benefit of a hit as junior Von Harrison reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and third and scored on the lone Lady Owl error of the contest.
After the visitors strung together three singles for a solo score in the top of the second, Bradley was able to cut the lead in half with three more runs in its second at bat.
Sophomore Emmaly Morgan started the rally off with a solid single. Freshman Kallie Hawkins reached on a fielder’s choice. Courtesy runner junior Sasha Barnett and Morgan were bunted up by junior Chanler Grady.
A walk to freshman Jenn Corbitt loaded the bases before Harrison hit into a fielder’s choice, with Morgan getting cut down at the plate.
Junior Abbey Abernathy drew an RBI-base on balls, before freshman Sydney Morgan drove home a pair of runners with a single to cut the difference to 8-4.
Neither team scored in the next two frames, but Ooltewah’s Ashunti Cooper opened the fifth frame with a triple and scored on a one-out hit by Allie Jones.
The Lady Owls wrapped up the scoring with a 4-spot in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of four Bearette miscues during the at bat.
