The event was sponsored by the Southeast Tennessee Develop-ment District through the Tennessee Career Center/ American Job Center.
Duncan is an award-winning youth advocate, publisher and an internationally recognized authority on the soft skills that employers look for when hiring.
He is the publisher of DuncanNuggets.com, a resource center packed with free videos, articles, and activities on character education and soft skills that have been used by over a million young people.
Duncan presented at the Brainerd BX located at 4011 Austin St. on July 18. The morning began with workshops focusing on soft skills that employers expect and was followed by his keynote address during lunch.
More than100 youth who completed their summer jobs throughout the nine-county region served by the program, along with their worksite supervisors and other Youth Services providers were present. Following Duncan’s lunchtime keynote address, the youth received certificates and their final paycheck.
Tony Cates, plant manager at Gestamp and chair of the Southeast Tennessee Develop-ment District’s Youth Council, said the Summer Work Experience Program is one of the most important activities offered.
“It is always rewarding to hear the successes that our emerging workforce has in the summer program” he said.
“Several have been offered jobs at their worksites after the program ends, and all are receiving valuable work experience to help them succeed in life.”
The Summer Work Experience Program is part of the Southeast Tennessee Development District’s year-round youth program and is funded through an agreement with the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development.
The Southeast Tennessee Development District/ Chattanooga Area Regional Council of Governments is a special purpose unit of government created by executive order and comprised of municipal and county governments within the Southeast Tennessee and Northwest Georgia region. SETDD provides and shares a staff to effectively plan, promote and implement programs that result in the development and improvement throughout the southeast region of the Tennessee River Valley Basin. Programs include the services delivered through the Area Agency on Aging and Disability, Tennessee Career Center/American Job Center, Southeast Industrial Development Association, and the Southeast Tennessee Tourism Association.
