A special “Meet and Greet” event to meet former Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz has been scheduled prior to the Aug. 15 United Way of Bradley County campaign kickoff luncheon.

Smoltz, who spent 20 years with the Braves and is a certain Hall-of-Fame inductee, will be at Lee University prior to the United Way kickoff luncheon, which will begin at noon (with doors opening at 11:30 a.m.) The luncheon will be in the university’s Walker Arena.

The “Meet and Greet” event is limited to 50 people, and tickets to the session were made available to some United Way supporters prior to this announcement. As of Monday, there were still 20 tickets available for the “Meet and Greet,” at a cost of $100 per ticket.

“John’s time in Cleveland is limited, so we wanted to make sure that we kept the amount of people who will have the chance to meet him at this ‘Green Room’ style event to a manageable number,” said United Way of Bradley County President and CEO Matt Ryerson.

Not only will Smoltz be at this event, which begins around 10:30 a.m., but he will also be posing with companies serving as Pacesetter and Challenger firms for the United Way campaign prior to the luncheon.

“He has graciously offered most of his day to help us kick off our campaign,” Ryerson said. “We appreciate his willingness to be available for the “Green Room’ event, and for photos with these key United Way supporters.”

Due to the commitment the Pacesetter and Challenger companies make to United Way, they are offered the exclusive opportunity to get their photographs made with Smoltz. They also will have their tables reserved for the luncheon.

“We hope to hear great early pledge totals from these companies so we can announce a good start to our campaign,” Ryerson said.

With only a few tickets remaining to the “Meet and Greet” with Smoltz, anyone interested is encouraged to contact the United Way office today to purchase a ticket. The cost per ticket is not included in the ticket cost for the luncheon.

“This will be your chance to meet a certain Hall-of-Famer up-close and personal, so if you are interested, please call our office,” Ryerson said. “Remember, you must have a ticket to be able to enjoy this ‘Green Room’ experience.”

A few tickets remain for the luncheon, at $20 per ticket. While the event begins at noon, with a large crowd expected for the luncheon, early arrival is recommended. The doors to the Walker Arena will open at 11:30 a.m.
