The Mustangs were able to get their eighth District 5-AAA win Monday night, as they went on to beat Soddy-Daisy, 8-3.
Walker Valley’s bats swung to life in the top of the third, getting a lead-taking four runs.
Logan Melton came up to bat with runners on second and third and only one out remaining. Melton’s single was enough to bring in Elijah West and Elijah Haynie for the first two runs.
Caleb Longley was up at the plate next, and kept his hot streak going as he smashed one over the fence for another two runs.
Two more runs would come for the Mustangs in the fifth.
Both Bradley Smith and Logan Melton singled, with Smith making it to third on Melton’s hit. A sacrifice fly by Longley brought Smith in and Melton managed to successfully steal second base.
Drew Lyles made it to first thanks to a Trojan fielding error and Melton was able to get another run.
Walker Valley held a 6-3 lead over Soddy-Daisy going into the seventh, then extended it by another two runs.
A double by John Simmons drove Melton home. Lyles followed up with a double of his own, bringing Simmons in for the final run.
Kamren Barnes struck out five Trojan batters and walked only one in the seven innings he pitched.
The Mustangs will host Soddy at home tonight at 7 for their final district game before the district tournament begins next week.
Currently, Walker Valley is in second place in District 5-AAA behind Ooltewah, with Bradley Central still posing a threat. If the Mustangs lose to Soddy tonight and Bradley wins against Rhea County, the Bears would then take over the second-place position.
