One day after a completed sweep of Soddy-Daisy secured the team second place in District 5-AAA baseball, Walker Valley took to a damp Mike Turner Field only to be handed a 12-1 loss at the hands of Baylor.
“We worked pretty hard to get the field ready, and to see us play like that was uninspiring to say the least,” Mustang head coach Joe Shamblin said. “Sometimes the kids give a lot during district play and maybe they didn’t have anything left to give. They played pretty hard (against Soddy-Daisy) on Monday and Tuesday.”
Chase Prince was the starting pitcher for Walker Valley but was unable to stall the Red Raider batters as they managed to get five runners in during his three innings on the mound. Four of those runs were scored in the first, with the fifth coming in the third inning.
“I knew they (Baylor) could hit it pretty good, but I think that even their coach was surprised at how well they hit,” Shamblin commented.
Ryan Mahaffey took over pitching duties in the top of the fourth, but fared no better than Prince against the hard-hitting Baylor team. Four more Red Raider runs were scored during the fourth inning, one of which was the result of a fielding error.
Tyrus Hamrick came in to relieve Mahaffey in the fifth inning and finished things out from the mound for the Mustangs. Baylor was able to add another run in the fifth.
Walker Valley’s lone run was scored in the bottom half of the inning.
Elijah Haynie, who was 2-for-2 for the night, singled and was able to steal second while Bradley Smith was at bat. A single into right field by Smith was just deep enough to drive Haynie in.
The Red Raiders’ two final runs came in the sixth.
“We’ve got to be able to muster up some stuff every now and then and we weren’t able to do that yesterday,” Shamblin explained.
The Mustangs will be back in action for their Senior Night game Friday at 7 p.m. as they take on Hixson.
