Dakota Garrett

Master Sgt. Sheldon R. Baker, a Cleveland resident, was promoted to sergeant major as of Nov. 1.

He is assigned to the 207th Regional Support Group, U.S. Forces Garrison Command. With promotion to sergeant major, he was selected to take the operations sergeant major position with the U.S. Forces Garrison Command to plan, execute and manage all daily operations for Kandahar Airbase, Kandahar, Afghanistan.

The unit arrived on the ground in July 2013 and is projected to return home in the spring 2014.

Baker is married to Donna L. Baker of Cleveland. He is the father of Ashley N. McKinney (Nikki Baker), Will McKinney, Kristen T. Baker (Taylor), and grandfather to Ryleigh McKinney and Reagan Robertson.

He has been a resident of Cleveland for more than 35 years, has served in the U.S. Army (active) for 10 years and the U.S. Army Reserves for over 12 years.

Sgt. Maj. Baker served in Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and now Operation Enduring Freedom.

Upon return from his current deployment, Baker will be assigned to the 87TH USAR East in Birmingham, Ala., as the logistics sergeant major.

When home, Baker and family are members of and attend First Baptist Church of Cleveland.

Darrell W. Sewell

Air Force Airman Darrell W. Sewell graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Sewell is the son of Victoria Sewell of Niota.He is a 2010 graduate of McMinn County High School, Athens.

William P. Jarman

Air Force Airman William P. Jarman graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Jarman is the son of Paula Jarman of Cleveland.

He graduated from a home-school program in 2012.

John R. Cooper

Air Force Airman John R. Cooper graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Cooper is the son of Connie Vinroe of Riceville.

He is a 2012 graduate of McMinn County High School, Athens.

Dustin Dakota Garrett

Marine PFC Dustin Dakota Garrett earned the title of United States Marine on Nov. 15.

He graduated from an intensive 13-week program from Parris Island, S.C., 2nd Battalion, which included three phases of training. While there he earned a badge for sharp shooter and received a ribbon for joining the USMC during a time of war.

Garrett is a 2012 honor graduate of Bradley Central High School.

He is the son of JR and Missy Ivey and brother to Nakoma Garrett, Tyler Pelfrey, Shelby Ivey Farris and Levon Ivey.

He is the grandson to Wayne and Debbie Monger and the late W.T. Garrett.
