This will be the seventh time the Merchants and Friends of Etowah and Etowah Parks & Recreation have hosted “our favorite Elvis tribute artist — Matt Cordell.”
Cordell will be singing favorite Elvis tunes, including numerous gospel and inspirational songs.
Aug. 16 commemorates the 35th anniversary of the death of Elvis Aaron Presley, who was known as the King of Rock ‘N’ Roll.
Cordell sings like an angel just dropped off Elvis through the back door, to hear Elvis’ songs sung like he sung them, a spokesman noted.
“Matt does the best job of this of anyone in the Southeast and has won numerous awards both nationally and beyond for his beautiful tribute to The King.”
Cordell’s favorite songs are gospel and inspirational.
Cordell has been performing Elvis’ hits for the last 25 years and has sung with every backup group that backed Elvis; he has traveled the cities Elvis toured, as well as made numerous tours over seas where Elvis never took his tours.
The late Charlie Hodge, who always came out onstage and laid the scarves around Elvis’s neck, was on stage a few years back with Cordell and he told the audience that he had been on stage with over 200 different Elvis tribute singers and that it was the first time he had stood on stage with one of them, and got chills up his arms just as he always did when Elvis sang.
He was the first entertainer to help start raising money for the Gem Theater restoration when he took them and the audience by surprise a few years back and asked the Merchants Coordinator to have the assistants pass the hats and if the audience would give to help the theater he would keep singing. He had come to the close of his show, but when the audience gave, he sang for another hour.
