Cleveland Police Department Criminal Investigations Division detectives are in charge of an investigation at a Carroll Court apartment complex where the body of a young man was found inside a car Monday.

CPD Lt. Robert Harbison said Monday there are several possibilities in the cause of death.

CPD Information Officer Evie West identified Johnathan E. Messer, 21, as the deceased.

According to 911 reports, just after 10 a.m., a call came in to the center indicating a young man was inside a black Toyota and was unresponsive. The caller told dispatchers that Messer had been drinking, passed out in the car and “they left him in the car overnight.”

CPD officers arrived on the scene and discovered Messer was not breathing.

Carroll Court is Lee University Married Student Housing, located at 1950 Cherry St.

Messer’s body was transported to Knoxville for an autopsy to determine cause of death and the investigation is ongoing, according to West.

West also noted that Messer was a resident of Cleveland.
