The Lee University Department of Business is partnering with the Internal Revenue Service's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to offer free tax preparation every Friday and Saturday in the Walker Memorial Building beginning Jan. 25.

IRS certified junior and senior accounting students will provide assistance at the Walker Memorial Building (Room 107) from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Fridays, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

The last day of filing tax returns through VITA at Lee is Saturday, April 13.

In its seventh year, the VITA program at Lee is a tax return preparation service for any taxpayer whose maximum gross annual income does not exceed $50,000.

“This free tax preparation service is to the advantage of many of our neighbors,” said Greg Della Franco, assistant professor of accounting at Lee University and coordinator of the VITA program on campus.

Della Franco said returns will be filed electronically to the Internal Revenue Service, and refunds will be generated faster the sooner they are filed, as well as quicker than paper returns.

“Naturally, a refund will come back more quickly if the return is sent on, say, Feb. 2, instead of waiting until April 2,” said Della Franco.

VITA Schedule is as follows:

Jan. 25 and 26; Feb. 1 and 2; Feb. 8 and 9; Feb. 15 and 16; Feb. 22 and 23; March 1 and 2; March 9 and 9; March 15 and 16; March 22 and 23; March 29 and 30; April 5 and 6; and April 12 and 13.
