LEE UNIVERSITY athletics is hosting Community Appreciation Week in observance of the school’s entry into NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference, and to serve as a preview for the caliber of competition that both will bring to the university campus. On Monday night, both the Flames and Lady Flames basketball teams opened their inaugural NCAA and GSC seasons by sweeping the men’s and women’s contests against the University of West Florida. On Thursday night, the teams return to NCAA and GSC action with a pair of games against Valdosta State University. Tipoffs are at 6 and 8 p.m. at Paul Dana Walker Arena. Tickets are half price ($3) for adults and all students high school age and lower will be admitted free. Helping to ring in this basketball week of good cheer is the Jolly Ol’ Elf himself (capably portrayed by the Cleveland Daily Banner’s own Joe Cannon). Santa Joe, who is also Bradley County’s favorite newspaper columnist as voted by Banner readers, has allowed himself to be surrounded by Lady Flames seniors. Seated are Hollie German, left, and Karley Miller. Standing, from left, are Rachel Lockhart, Myriah Iles and Madison Lee.
