The Cleveland State softball team battled a brisk wind, spring snow showers and the Piedmont College Lady Lions on a bone-chilling Tuesday afternoon at Lady Cougar Field.

The home team overcame all three elements, pounding out 27 hits along the way to snapping a six-game losing streak and starting a new win streak with a sweep of the doubleheader by a final score of 10-3 in game one and 10-2 in game two.

The Lady Cougars jumped out front with a pair of runs in their first turn at the dish in the bottom of the first inning. Four singles produced the runs with Emily Huston and Hannah Powell picking up an RBI apiece for a 2-0 lead.

Three straight hits added another run for the home team in the second frame when Sara O'Rear doubled in a run. The Lady Cougars doubled their lead an inning later with back-to-back doubles by Tori Roberts and Amber Swaney that plated a run. A Lady Lion miscue let another run cross the plate and the lead grew to 6-0.

Piedmont sliced the lead in half with two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth on an error, a hit batter with the bases loaded and a sacrifice fly from Sarah Walker to cut the score to 6-3.

Cleveland State put game one away with four big insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Huston and Powell singled in a run each and Roberts knocked another in with a sacrifice fly.

Kelsey Haley tossed seven strong inning, giving up her first hit in the fifth. She allowed only five hits and one earned run to pick up the win. Tori Mitchell took the loss for Piedmont while Avery Migues pitched in relief.

Huston, Miranda Smith and Perry Hindi all had three hits to pace the Lady Cougars while Powell, Amber Swaney and Baylee Carroll had two hits apiece.

The Lady Cougars’ hit paraded continued in game two, with the home team picking right where it left off with four big runs in the bottom of the first inning. Powell plated the first run with a single, Ashley Swaney followed with a short-hop hit off the fence for a two-run double. Carroll added a run with a single to give her team a quick 4-0 advantage.

Cleveland State tacked on two more runs in the second frame and another pair in the third. Huston and Hindi added an RBI each with a pair of two-out hits in the second and Jennifer Kern tripled in a run while Roberts singled in another for a 9-2 lead. CSCC added one more run in the fourth to finish off the win and the sweep.

Piedmont got on the board in the top of the third with back-to-back doubles from Mitchell and Migues that plated a pair of runs.

Alexa Perian went the distance to pick up the win for Cleveland State (9-23) allowing only six hits while Sarah Walker took the loss for Piedmont and Kristina Coggins pitched in relief.

The Lady Cougars will travel to Jackson State for a four-game set this weekend.
