Kathleen Helen Smith Turpin, 88, of Decatur, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013.

She was born on Oct. 17, 1925, in Dewittville, N.Y., to the late Ernest and Helen Smith.

She has been a resident of Decatur for 15 years. She graduated summa cum laude from God’s Bible School and College in Cincinnati, Ohio, with a bachelor’s of theology degree. She loved spending time cooking and performing needle arts— especially crocheting. However, above all of these, she loved and cherished her family as a loving spouse, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Brian Lynn Turpin; one brother, David Smith; and one sister, Alice Francis.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving husband of 65 years, WWII Navy veteran Gene Turpin; two daughters: Cheryl Cogdill (Larry) and Elizabeth James (Stacy); five sons: Randall Turpin, Steven Turpin (Ruby), Roland Turpin (Collette), Leigh Turpin (Debi) and Larry Turpin (Patty); five brothers; five sisters; 21 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and several extended family members and friends.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Union Grove Baptist Church in Decatur. A funeral will be held at the church at 1 p.m.

Interment will follow the service at Mountain view Memorial Cemetery in Decatur.
