Joseph Herman Schafer passed away Monday, March 8, 2013, in South Beloit, Ill.

He was born on May 29, 1961, in Stillwater, Okla., and was currently residing in Cleveland with family.

He served over 20 years in the U.S. Army and fought in the Gulf War. Each person who knew him lost a piece of himself or herself when he passed away, but he will always be with us in our heart, mind and soul. He is in heaven (a place of supreme happiness) and will always be watching over us. He is an angel of God. Amen.

He was preceded in death by his father, William R. Schafer; and father-in-law, Leonard Zanker.

He is survived by his wife, Milissa P. Schafer; son, Michael A. Zanker; daughter, Vanessa T. Schafer; mother, Ella L. Judge-Johnson; sisters: Patricia Schafer, Linda Schafer, Judy Schafer, Diana Grant and Teresa Simon, all of Oklahoma City, Okla.; mother-in-law, Norna Zanker; and six sisters-in-law: Tina Dunmore, Ajena Henderson, Rebecca Dill, Natile Shelton, Jesica Zanker and Aleisha Wallace, all of Cleveland.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
