John Thomas Smith, 76, of Athens, passed away on Saturday morning, Aug. 10, 2013 at his home.

He was born in Monroe County, on Sept. 10, 1936.

He was retired from the Athens Bed Company after 42 years of service. He and his late wife Ruby enjoyed going camping, going to the mountains, his five grandchildren and traveling to watch his grandson Cody go dirt biking and until he was unable and working on his farm.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years Ruby N. Webb Smith who passed away on Feb. 9, 2013. He is also preceded in death by his parents, Riley David and Mable Dawson Smith; his brother, David Fredrick Smith; his grandparents, John and Mary Self Smith and Joseph A “Joe” and Hattie Holt Dawson; and one granddaughter Alyssa Smith.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory one son Tim D. Smith and his wife Rachel; his five grandchildren: Cody, Brandi, Christi, Garrett and Tori; one sister, Jo Ann Bledsoe and her husband Bill of Cleveland; two beloved aunt, Dorothy Dawson Frisbie and Anna Smith Johnson; his uncle, Kenneth “Chick” Dawson of Rockford, Ill.; three nieces, one nephew, and many cousins, extended family members and friends.

The family will hold a memorial gathering on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, from noon until 6 p.m. at the family home located at 340 County Road 370 in Athens, TN.
