James L. Smith Jr., 63, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, in a Knoxville hospital.

Junior, as he was known, was the son of the late Mary Lou Wright Smith and James L. Smith Sr.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, William and Mary Ellen Smith; his maternal grandparents, the Rev. Will Wright and Clara Mae Wright Jenkins; his brothers: Jimmy “Tight Eye” Wright and Tommy Lamar Smith; his father-in-law, Boyd Herring; his stepmother, Maxine Smith; and his stepfather-in-law, Carl Bradford.

He had more than 26 years of service with RaceTrac Petroleum as a developmental trainer. He was an avid sports fan and a huge Andy Griffith fan.

Most of all he loved spending time with his family. He was a member of the South Cleveland Church of God.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Jeri Smith of Cleveland; his daughter, Tiffanie Lande and her husband, Jason, of Melbourne, Fla.; his sons: Wayne Smith and his companion, Keeonna Sherlin, of Cleveland and Roger Smith Sr. of Oklahoma City, Okla.; his grandchildren: Bailey Workman and Sofia Workman, both of Melbourne, Roger Smith Jr. of Pittsburgh, Penn., Scarlett Smith of Oklahoma City, Harleigh and Christina Smith of Alcoa, Austin, Chace and Chloe Allen and Nikkie Loftis; his sister, Wanda Masingale and her husband, Bobby, of Cleveland; his brothers: Bobby Smith of Moultrie, Ga., Rick Smith, Jackie Smith and his wife, Julie, all of Cleveland; his mother-in-law, Audrie Bradford of Cleveland; his brother-in-law, Boyd “Pokey” Herring and his wife, Sally, of Walker, La.; sisters-in-law: Boydrea Gonzales and her husband, Ray, of Baton Rouge, La., Sheryll Johnson and her husband, Jerry, Cherry Poirrier and her husband, Tommy, all of Denham Springs, La., Vanessa Swafford and her husband, Greg, of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

The Remembrance of Life service will be conducted this evening, Jan. 9, 2014, at 7 from the North Ocoee Chapel of the Jim Rush Funeral Homes with Pastor Chris Moody, Dr. Carl R. Hobbs, the Rev. Kenneth Bowers and Carla Coggins officiating.

Interment will be on Friday at the Moores Chapel Cemetery with Shawn Coggins, Matthew Poirrier, Curtis Hayes, Jeremy Smith, Ricky Smith Jr. and Kenneth Allen serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 7 tonight before the service at 7 and then again on Friday from 11 to 1 p.m., at the funeral home.
