MEMPHIS — The Cleveland State softball team packed their bags and headed west for their final road trip of the season as they traveled to “The Bluff City” for a four-game Region VII Conference series with the Lady Saluqis of Southwest Tennessee.

The teams split the first pair of games of the four-game set on Friday afternoon as they dodged the raindrops and waited out a lightning delay with the Lady Saluqis squeaking by in game one for a 4-3 win while the Lady Cougars (18-25, 13-20) bounced back in a big way in game two to end it in five innings by a final score of 9-0.

The visitors scored all the runs they would need in the fourth inning of game two as they played long ball. Sydney Howell broke up a scoreless affair with a solo home run to leadoff the inning. Amber Covington singled and came around to score on a single from Paige Mayer while Emily Huston capped off the rally with a mammoth three-run homer for a 5-0 lead.

The Lady Cougars continued the hit parade an inning later as they tacked on four insurance runs to seal the win. Three Lady Saluqi miscues pushed a run across and set the stage once again for Huston as the Lady Cougar shortstop dialed long distance for the second time in as many innings and again crushed a three-run homer for a 9-0 advantage.

That would be more than enough run support for Ida Watson who tossed five shutout innings at the home team to get the win allowing only two hits along the way. Taylor Thomas took the loss for Southwest.

"I'm so proud of the way the girls played today," said Lady Cougar coach Katie Willingham. "The team really came ready to play. We didn't get the win in game one, but we played tough and Southwest played well. Game two was a different story. Ida was almost unhittable and Emily was amazing. I hate that we couldn't get the win for Kelsey in game one, she pitched great."

Maura Ditto doubled in a run in the top of the first and later scored on an error to start game one and give CSCC a quick 2-0 lead.

Southwest chipped away with a run in their half of the first as Kelsey Cassell singled in a run and then tied the game in the third as Ali Hare singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. The Lady Saluqis took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, 3-2, on a pair of Lady Cougar miscues.

Singles from Ditto and Howell and a nice sacrifice bunt by Covington allowed the Lady Cougars to score the tying run in the top of the fifth, but a solo homer from Taylor in the bottom of the frame proved to be the game winner as the home team held on for the win in game one.

Haley Power got the win for Southwest, while Kelsey Capella was the tough luck losing pitcher.

Huston led the way with six big RBI's and three hits on the day while O'Rear had three hits on the day as well.
