Ralph Buckner Jr., CEO and funeral director at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home, recently received his recertification for the designation of Certified Funeral Service Practitioner from the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice.

“A number of professions grant special recognition to members upon completion of specific academic and professional programs, and CFSP is the funeral service’s national individual recognition,” said Kimberly A. Gehlert, executive director of the APFSP.

Since its founding in 1976, the academy has had three main goals: to recognize those practitioners who have voluntarily entered into a program of personal and professional growth, to raise and improve the standards of funeral services and to encourage practitioners to make continuing education a lifelong process in their own self-interest of the families they serve, and the community in which they serve.

To initially receive this award, Buckner completed a 180-hour program of continuing education activities and events, and was required to accumulate 20 hours to get recertified each year. Credits are awarded by the academy for work leading to personal and/or professional growth in four areas: academic activities, professional activities, career review (for retroactive credit) and community and civic activities.

“A select few have distinguished themselves among their peers within the funeral service profession as they continue their education to exceed the highest standards of care,” Gehlert said. “This achievement is especially notable because Mr. Buckner has voluntarily elected to participate in quality educational and service opportunities that far surpass what the funeral service licensing board in Tennessee requires. Mr. Buckner has committed to a program of lifelong learning to serve you, and families in your community, with the level of excellence expected of a CFSP.”

In addition to achieving the CFSP designation, Buckner has also been a Certified Preplanning Consultant since 1999, a designation given by the National Funeral Directors Association. He was the director of the Tennessee State Board of Funeral Directors from 2004 to 2008, and is currently a board member of the Funeral Service Foundation.
