The yard sale is to benefit Pam Simons in her fight against scleroderma, a progressive disease which hardens cells of the body. Worsening symptoms, six blood transfusions in the last few months, and trips back and forth to Duke University to treat gastrointestinal bleeding have forced Simons to give up her lifetime of work for area senior citizens at Bradley Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
After dedicating 30-plus years to attending to others, the nurse is now engaged in a fight of her own that began three years ago. She is currently waiting for the opportunity to undergo experimental stem-cell replacement therapy at Duke University.
While Simons curtails activities outside her home, Restoration Fellowship Church, under the direction of Dr. John Looper, is busy raising funds to help with the mounting medical bills.
In November, a Youth Talent Showcase kicked off a series of three fundraisers. A Southern gospel celebration and chili cook off followed it in February to help fill the financial gap. This is the last fundraiser of the three.
