SAN ANTONIO — With seniors Matt Emery and Hunter Vest leading the way, the Lee men’s golf team will be deadlocked with St. Edward’s (Texas) heading into the final 18 of the 54-hole San Antonio Shootout on Tuesday.

The Flames were burning hot in the opening 18 on Monday, scorching the TPC San Antonio course with an even-par round of 288. However, the winds picked up on the TPC San Antonio Canyons course during the afternoon 18, and so did the scoring totals. Lee posted a 312, but that was good enough to remain in a two-way tie with St. Edwards at 600.

“I thought we came out of the gates really well this morning, and thank goodness we did,” said head coach John Maupin. “The wind really picked up in the afternoon and we just didn’t handle it as well as I know we can. We had too many big numbers in that second round.”

Emery had the lead after firing a 3-under 69 in the opening round. He slipped to a 77 during the afternoon and settled for a tie for second with three other golfers and finds himself 3 strokes behind the tourney leader, Mike Hearne (143) of Southern Nazarene.

Vest opened with a 70, but battled to fire a 77 in round 2 and his 147 earned a tie for fifth with two others. Next came sophomore Taylor Davis. After a 75 in the morning round, he dropped only two strokes in the afternoon and totaled a 153. He is knotted with seven others for the 25th position.

Newcomer Shea Sylvester is tied for 32nd and tallied the next score after rounds of 74-81 — 155. Sophomore Peyton started the day with a 77 and finished with a 79-156. He is tied with six others in a field that is very tight going into the final 18.

“We are in a good position for [Tuesday] and that’s what you want,” commented Maupin. “I think we can come out and build more on that first round. [It] will be a great opportunity to go head-to-head with some high caliber teams. We are looking forward to it.”
