She was born on June 16, 1925, in Chesterfield, S.C., a daughter of the late Carl and Beulah Burris. She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Horton; parents; one sister, Stella Knighten; and one brother, Clyde Burris.
She had made the Cleveland and Athens area her home for the past 53 years, moving here from Rock Hill, S.C.
She was of the Christian faith and worked for many years at Carroll Printing locally. She was a devoted mother, wife and grandmother. She dearly loved her grandchildren and was especially proud of great-grandson, Caden Troy Smith.
She was musically inclined, playing the piano, organ and accordion for various churches. She also enjoyed knitting, crochet and various crafts. For our family, she lives on through those she loved and who loved her, and in the example of faith and courage she provided.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory two daughters: Wanda Kay Charles and husband John, and Wanda Ruth Bourne; one sister, Estelle Burris; two brothers: Frank Burris (Frances) and Bill Burris (June); five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Thelma Burris; and numerous other extended family members and friends.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at 3 p.m. at the Sunset Memorial Gardens located on North Lee Highway in Cleveland with the Revs. Gary Sears and Jamie Sears officiating.
