The Cleveland Middle School Dance Team traveled to the TSSAA State Dance Championships in Murfreesboro on Saturday, Nov. 23, and won runner-up in the state in the junior high hip-hop category.

“The competition was fierce, and I am so proud of my girls for placing second in a category that included talented teams from all over the state of Tennessee,” coach Kelly Owens said. “I told the girls that their hard work and determination definitely paid off in Murfreesboro.”

On Sunday, Nov. 24, the talented CMS dancers traveled to Dalton, Ga., to compete in the Fusion Cheer and Dance Competition and took home first place in junior high hip-hop, first place in junior high jazz and first place in junior high pom.

The highlight of the day for the CMS Dance Raiderettes was when they won the overall Grand Champion Award. This meant they received the highest dance score in the entire competition.

The judges described the CMS Dance Team’s jazz routine as “high energy with smooth transitions” and “having awesome precision.” The CMS dancers got a perfect score of 100 on their pom routine from one of the judges and were given comments such as, “Awesome!; Nailed it!; and Great Execution!”

Finally, the CMS Dance Team’s competitive hip-hop received a score of 99, with the judges thanking them for working hard.

“The girls were thrilled to be rewarded for their hard work and told me they had a blast performing in Dalton,” Owens said “The crowd was behind them, and they just did what they know. I am very proud and am looking forward to our future competitions so that they can show their talent and get even better and stronger!”
