CMS dance team takes home two grand championship titles

CMS Dance Teams
The Varsity Cleveland Middle School Dance Team competed in the Fusion Cheer and Dance Competition in Dalton, Ga., and brought home first place in junior pom, first place in junior hip hop and first in junior jazz. Varsity Dance Team competitive members are, in no particular order: Chloe Baggett (captain), Taylor Allison, Adria Smith, Josey McCluskey, Mallory Gumm, Jessica Johnson, Teya Kelsey, Tehya Dyer, India Wilkins, Whitney Copeland, Julia Holt Ledford, Elizabeth Owens, Cassie Jones, Anna Craig, Narissa Riley, Madison Eshenbrenner, Jordan Kidd, Courtney Hamilton, Maya Sharma, Cassidy Johnson, Emma Brusky, Sarah Emily Sentell, Alex Paladian, Jessica Davis and Riley Calandrino.

Cleveland Middle School Junior Varsity and Varsity Dance Teams traveled to Dalton, Ga., recently to compete in the Fusion Cheer and Dance Competition at the Dalton Convention Center.

The Varsity Cleveland Middle School Dance Team competed and brought home first place in junior pom, first place in junior hip hop and first place in junior jazz. The team won three trophies, champion banners and medals for these wins. The highlight of the day was when the talented young seventh- and eighth-grade CMS dancers won the overall Grand Champion title defeating every dance score in the competition. The girls received a trophy and Grand Champion banner, and each girl received a Grand Champion hoodie for her win.

The CMS Raiderettes received a “99 out of 100” on their hip hop routine from one of the judges. Varsity Dance Team competitive members are: Chloe Baggett (captain), Taylor Allison, Adria Smith, Josey McCluskey, Mallory Gumm, Jessica Johnson, Teya Kelsey, Tehya Dyer, India Wilkins, Whitney Copeland, Julia Holt Ledford, Elizabeth Owens, Cassie Jones, Anna Craig, Narissa Riley, Madison Eshenbrenner, Jordan Kidd, Courtney Hamilton, Maya Sharma, Cassidy Johnson, Emma Brusky, Sarah Emily Sentell, Alex Paladian, Jessica Davis, Tiffany Croft, and Riley Calandrino. Head coach of the CMS Varsity Dance Team is CMS Math teacher, Kelly Ann Owens. Assistant coach is CMS science teacher Tonya Cawood. Team choreographer is Susan Dyer of Cookeville. James Vassell of Cleveland, also choreographs game routines for the talented group.

Owens describes this team as “energetic, driven and extremely talented.” She emphasizes responsibility, dedication and character in her dancers. She proudly bragged that every Varsity dancer was on the honor roll in the first grading period.

The Junior Varsity CMS Dance Team also competed at theFusion Cheer and Dance Competition and won first place in the Youth Pom Division and first place in the Youth Hip Hop Division winning two trophies, team medals and two championship banners. Members of the team competing in the Dalton competition were Laney Brown (captain), Brae Clayton, Hannah Shackelford, Makayla Temple, Caroline Owens, Emily Campbell, Monique Mee, Alexa Witt, Taylor Parker, Allison McGinnis, Claire Gilliland, McKenzie Senters, Hannah Graig, Brooke Davis, Reese Cavitt and Tiffany Croft. Head coach is Kelly Owens and assistant coach is Jaymee Wilkinson. The team choreographer is Susan Dyer of Cookeville.

Kelly Owens describes this team as “improving every day, and extremely talented in the overall performance quality of the routines.”

“These girls are so excited about learning to dance and are committed to become outstanding varsity members,” Owens said.

The CMS Varsity Dance Team traveled to Stockbridge, Ga., to compete in the Inferno Spirit Cheer and Dance Competition. The CMS Varsity dancers won first in junior hip hop, first in junior jazz and first in junior pom. They received trophies for each award. The CMS girls were very excited when they won the highest score in the entire competition, winning the Junior Dance Grand Champion Award for their score in their jazz routine to music from the musical “Grease.” They received a Grand Champion banner, and each girl received a Grand Champion hoodie for their high honor. The CMS team will compete in Sevierville; Atlanta; Ringgold, Ga.; Huntsville, Ala.; and Knoxville in the coming months.
