“There is definitely more enthusiasm this year on the part of local businesses, service groups and churches for gathering new footwear for orphans,” reported Keith Gombash, a local Shoes for Orphan Souls volunteer.

“We’re really excited to see First Baptist come on board as a drop location,” Gombash continued. “They’ve joined older partners, like North Cleveland Church of God. And we’re especially happy about businesses showing an eagerness to contribute.”

“Premier Tire is pitching in a pair of athletic shoes for every oil change,” he added, “and two pairs for each set of four tires.”

Georgia Gann, a senior vice president for Southern Heritage Bank, said the Cleveland Civitan Club, which has about 50 members, is once again collecting for this year’s drive.

When asked why Civitan chose the Shoes program, she said, “Because of what it does for the healing of the children. Shoes help protect them from all sorts of diseases. These shoes go to children who may never have had any before, never. At Civitan, we want to ‘give back.’”

Regionally, the Shoes For Orphan Souls project is sponsored by Chattanooga radio station WMBW, 88.9 FM.
