Brookes Edge complex opening to first tenants

Those looking for housing in Cleveland will soon have a few more options in the form of an apartment complex set to cost an estimated $25 million to complete.

Today, the first tenants are set to move into the first completed building of the Brookes Edge apartment complex located near Paul Huff Parkway.

The complex, which will eventually boast 400 apartments, is owned by Shumate Development Corporation, which is based out of Westerville, Ohio.

John Shumate Sr., president of the company, said he chose the property he did because of its proximity to Interstate 75 and the growing Chattanooga area. The complex is located at 3925 Adkisson Drive N.W., which is both near the Exit 27 ramp and Cleveland State Community College.

The apartments will be available in four different layout options. Tenants can choose from either one or two-bedroom options with either one or two bathrooms in each apartment.

Apartments will be leased on an annual basis, and rent costs are set to range from $775 for one bedroom and one bathroom to $975 for the two bedroom, two bathroom option.

The apartment buildings themselves are made of “quality materials” like HardiePlank siding and stone exteriors and Anderson brand windows, which Shumate said accounted for the cost.

Shumate said the apartments were designed in such a way that they include “homey” features so that renters do not feel like they have to go without things like large closets because they do not live in detached houses.

“We consider these homes for people,” Shumate said.

Each apartment comes with all the major kitchen appliances and a washer and dryer set.

Apartments also come with architectural features like a combined kitchen, dining area and living room and walk-in closets in the bedrooms.

In addition, each unit has an outdoor deck adjoining it. Other amenities like nine-foot ceilings, bathtubs and solid wood kitchen cabinets are also included.

“We have a quality product here,” Melanie Wickman, the community manager at Brookes Edge, said.

Wickman added that a favorite feature of hers was not inside the apartments but outside — the view of mountains from the complex’s hilltop location.

Shared facilities like a clubhouse with features like a gym room and a billiards table are also located on the property, and an outdoor swimming pool is set to be built as construction progresses.

Brookes Edge is being built in phases. The clubhouse and the first apartment building have been built so far, and most of the 36 existing units have already been leased, Shumate said. Eight more such buildings are currently under construction, and some people have already reserved spots in them.

The complex’s management will host a grand opening event Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to show off the clubhouse and model apartments.
