The Bearettes took off with the lead and never looked back, ending the match with an 8-2 victory.
“This was a good game to get our offense moving. We introduced a new offense Monday at practice and the girls executed it very well tonight,” head coach Chrissy McKinney said. “I was very happy seeing every girl get involved in the play. There are some that are a little stronger on the ball than others, and we don’t want anyone getting left out and not utilized.”
Scoring for Bradley got started by sophomore captain Haley Yarber just three minutes into the match.
“Haley Yarber scored first to open us up with our goal scoring, and I think that she had so much control in the center when it came to setting up plays,” McKinney stated.
The Bearettes next goal came 15 minutes later, as senior captain Monse Rincon beat the Lady Pounders’ goalkeeper at the net. The assist came from junior Caley Jones, who was just getting warmed up for what would be a dominating offensive performance.
Central was able to beat senior goalkeeper and captain Lydia Brown and answer with a goal of its own just two minutes later.
“I think how quick some of their girls were surprised our defense and when they got through that was a keeper’s worst nightmare — having to decide to come out or stay [near the goal],” McKinney commented. “You can tell that Lydia still has a few things on timing to work through, but she works hard every day.”
In the final 12 minutes of play in the first half, Jones was able to get past the Lady Pounders’ defense twice, adding two more goals to the scoreboard.
The second half got underway with Central scoring just one minute in.
A two-goal lead just wasn’t good enough for the Bearettes though, and five minutes later Yarber scored off an inside-the-box shot.
Once again Jones scored twice in under 10 minutes, with one assist coming from Yarber.
In the final minutes of play Kaitlyn Enriques added one final point to the scoreboard, as her cross shot ricocheted off of a Central defender’s head.
Overall, coach McKinney was pleased with the efforts of her team, and wasn’t surprised by the offensive display by four-goal scorer Jones.
“Caley has been one of the top scorers each season that she’s been on the team,” McKinney commented. “Megan Howell and Monse Rincon, on the outsides, did a fantastic job taking it down and crossing it in, which is what we wanted to work on in the game.”
On Thursday the Bearettes will be on the road, playing East Ridge at 7 p.m.
Despite the fact East Ridge graduated several of its starters last year, McKinney doesn’t feel the match will be an easy one.
“I think they’re a pretty close matchup with us, so it will be all about finishing,” McKinney said.
