Officials are also announcing residents will be able to continue to bring their unused, unwanted drugs to the office at any time since the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office has been designated as a permanent collection point.
The Drug Take Back has been a biannual event for two years, but now has been expanded.
According to officials with the Criminal Investigations Division, which was responsible for collecting and securing the narcotics brought in by area residents, approximately 236 pounds will be headed for a proper disposal.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has recognized the success in collection and has chosen the sheriff’s office as a full-time collection point, according to Sheriff Jim Ruth.
A drug-intake storage safe was delivered to the offices late last week.
During the past two years, more than 800 pounds of narcotics have been delivered to the office for disposal.
The program is a nationwide effort of the DEA and GRAAB Coalition and has offered a “spring cleaning” atmosphere when it comes to cleaning out the medicine cabinet.
These collected drugs will not make it into the environment or into the hands of drug abusers, according to officials.
“We know that during the course of time, residents’ prescriptions go out of date or unused and we are glad to provide the opportunity for them to bring their drugs into our office for safe disposal,” said Bob Gault, media relations coordinator for BCSO.
The program keeps unused and unwanted narcotics from being improperly disposed such as flushing them down the drain, allowing the narcotics to saturate the water table, leeching into wells or wastewater treatment operations.
Proper disposal also keeps high-powered and addictive drugs out of the hands of drug abusers, according to officials.
Items accepted for the Pharmaceutical Collection Program include:
- Over-the-counter medications;
- Pet medications;
- Medicated ointment, lotions or drops;
- Liquid medications (in leak-proof containers);
- Inhalers; and
- Pills in any packaging(glass bottles, plastic containers, plastic bags, etc.)
Items not accepted in the program include:
- Illegal drugs and narcotics;
- Blood sugar equipment;
- IV bags;
- Bloody or infectious waste; and
- Personal care products (shampoo and lotions, among others).
The hours for drop-off are Monday through Friday, 8 to 11:30 a.m., and 1 to 4 p.m. The service will not be available on weekends or designated county holidays.
The Criminal Investigations Division entrance is located on the south side of the Bradley County Judicial Complex. The safe is located in the secured area of the Criminal Investigations Division offices.
