From the operatic sounds of Laurie Rubin to The Beast’s indie jazz/hip-hop blend to Jabali Afrika’s modern sounds straight from Kenya, these programs will delight and enrich.
A mezzo-soprano opera singer who has written a book about her life, designs jewelry and is a motivational speaker, Rubin has lived an impressive life. And she’s done it all while blind.
One day at a time, one completed dream at a time, Rubin turned skeptics into believers, and she is bringing her immense talents and tales to Cleveland State Community College on Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.
Mixing jazz and hip-hop, Durham, N.C.’s The Beast has been delighting audiences since 2007. But The Beast isn’t only about show. Members also work to educate their audience.
Through a unique curriculum created by the group’s emcee, Pierce Freelon, the group provides workshops on creativity, improvisation and the history of African-American music. And they’ll be doing just that at CSCC on Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m.
Hailing from Kenya, Jabali Afrika’s powerful percussion and huge vocal harmonies meld seamlessly with the seemingly incompatible genres of traditional spiritual songs and rock-reggae.
With a sound all their own, Jabali Afrika represents what can happen when creative minds take an entire nation’s musical history and infuse it with youthful energy. Jabali Afrika will perform Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
“Cleveland State Community College is excited about these three programs which continue the 2013-2014 Program Series,” stated Tracey Wright, director of Special Programs and Community Relations.
“Three different genres of music are being offered to satisfy music enthusiasts from a variety of populations. This is a great opportunity for individuals to come and learn and be exposed to these outstanding performers and their art forms.”
The 2013-14 Program Series is sponsored by the Office of Special Programs and Community Relations.
All events are free and open to the general public.
They each take place in the George R. Johnson Cultural Heritage Center on the Cleveland State Community College campus. Registration is recommended.
