4-H members from Polk County traveled to regional and subregional Public Speaking contests recently. The subregional 4-H contest for grades 4-8 was held at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga campus. Participating from Polk County was fourth-grader Maleia Bigham from Copper Basin Elementary School, fifth-grader Riley Smith from Copper Basin, sixth-grader Iris Wilson from Copper Basin, seventh-grader Sawyer O’Neal from Copper Basin High School, and eighth-grader Skylar Hatcher from Chilhowee Middle School. Bigham and Hatcher placed first in competition, and Smith placed third. The contestants gained a skill that will remain with them throughout life. These individuals had recently won the Polk County 4-H Public Speaking contest after entering their local club contest. From left are Bigham, Hatcher, O’Neal, Smith and Wilson.
