A 10 year-old Taylor Elementary student remains in critical condition today after he reportedly entered the roadway from a church parking lot riding his bicycle and collided with a passenger vehicle traveling on Bates Pike.

According to Capt. W.G. Campbell of the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office, investigation is continuing into the incident which occurred just before 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The child was treated by Bradley County Emergency Medical Service prior to being flown by LifeForce helicopter to T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital at Erlanger, according to Stan Clark of BCEMS. The helicopter landed at the scene.

Campbell said investigation so far has revealed the child had been riding his bike in the parking lot of Union Grove Church of Christ, located at 4889 Bates Pike.

Campbell believed the child traveled down a hill into a Toyota SUV driven by a Sylvia Peels, 54. Investigation indicated the child struck the vehicle in the driver’s side near the fender and door. Officials said the child was not wearing a safety helmet.

Peels’ vehicle swerved into a field after impact, according to Campbell.

Bob Gault, media relations coordinator for BCSO, said the woman was taken to SkyRidge Medical Center for treatment.

Clark said she was transported via BCEMS ambulance.

Assisting at the scene were Bradley County Sheriff’s deputies and Bradley County Fire-Rescue personnel.
