The oak was designated as the official national tree in 2004. Americans helped to choose the oak tree as a national symbol through a vote hosted by the National Arbor Day Foundation. The redwood, dogwood, maple and pine also made the top five. More than 60 species of oak grow in the United States, which makes it our most widespread hardwood tree. The oak is cherished for its beauty, abundant shade and top-quality lumber. It is said to represent our nation’s strength, as it grows from a small acorn into a large tree whose many branches continue to strengthen and reach skyward with every passing year. In honor of the preservation of the nation and its history, the Chestuee Chapter National Society Daughters of the American distributed and planted 16 trees the last week of March. Included in the types of trees were flowering, fruit, pine, and red oak. The Chestuee Chaper of DAR meets on Saturdays, 1 to 3 p.m., at Kinser Church of God Family Center. THESE NEW BRICKS will be used to adorn the front walkway into the Cleveland Bradley County Public Library. The only difference is that these new bricks will feature the 234 names of the library's donors from over the years. After the old bricks were found to be fading, the library decided to replace them at no charge to the initial donors.

The Alpha Theta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa heard from local historian, author and former teacher Debbie Moore, right. She spoke to the group about Caney Creek Village. This was a village founded in 1912 to house the workers and builders of the Ocoee River Dams 1, 2 and 3. The village at its height had over 40 people living there. The houses were state-of-the art with running water, electricity and indoor plumbing. The village had a hotel, sidewalks and its own school. It was quite a marvel for the time. She said her video documentary and book are available for sale at the Museum Center at Five Points in Cleveland. With Moore is Kelly DeLaLux.
